Webflow: Professional Web Development with Code, Visual Development and an AI Copilot
Webflow is a professional development tool: classic coding, visual coding and a strong MCP server that lets AI work as a copilot. How I use it to build websites and handle migrations.
There are many misconceptions about Webflow. The most persistent one: that Webflow is a tool for clicking websites together without knowing what is happening underneath. The opposite is true. Webflow is a professional development tool that combines classic coding with visual coding and comes with a strong MCP server that lets AI work as a copilot in development.
That is exactly how I have been working with Webflow for years, for new websites as well as for migrations from other systems. In this post, I show you what that means in practice and what you get out of it as an SME.
In short: Webflow produces real, clean code. Visual development speeds things up, custom code extends what is possible, and AI handles repetitive tasks through the MCP server. Quality control stays with a human.
Visual coding: a faster way to clean code
In the Webflow Designer, you don't work with templates or prefabricated blocks but directly with the fundamentals of the web: HTML elements, CSS properties, flexbox, grid, breakpoints and classes. You see every change immediately, and Webflow writes the corresponding code in the background. If you understand HTML and CSS, you work much faster in Webflow because the constant switching between code editor and browser disappears.
This approach is called visual development or visual coding. It doesn't replace expertise, it makes it more efficient. You'll find more about the benefits in my post The Advantages of Visual Coding.
Structure based on Client-First
For a website to stay maintainable for years, it needs a clear structure. I work with Client-First, a widely used class system for Webflow by Finsweet. It defines how classes are named, how spacing is set up and how pages are built. The result is a consistent design system that other developers can find their way around immediately.
Classic coding: wherever it is needed
Visual coding covers a large part of the work. But professional websites often need more, and for that Webflow offers classic options:
- Custom code: Your own HTML, CSS and JavaScript can be added per page, globally for the whole website, or as an embed anywhere on a page. This is how I build features that go beyond the standard, such as custom filters, calculators or connections to external services.
- Components: I set up recurring elements such as the navigation, footer, cards or call-to-action sections as components with properties. A change in one place applies across the whole website.
- CMS: The built-in CMS maps blog posts, case studies, team members, job postings or FAQs as structured collections, with reference fields, filters and dynamic template pages.
- Structured data: With JSON-LD, I mark up content for search engines and AI systems, for example organization, article, FAQ or breadcrumbs. On CMS templates, this markup is filled in automatically with the content of each entry.
- Code components: With DevLink, Webflow components can be connected to React projects. For websites with an app component, this is a bridge between visual development and classic code.
So in Webflow, visual and classic are not opposites. They complement each other, and for each task I decide which route leads to the result faster and more cleanly.
The MCP server: AI as a copilot in development
The third building block is the newest, and by now one of the most important for my work. Webflow provides an official MCP server. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard that lets AI assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor work directly with an application.
In concrete terms, the AI can create and edit CMS entries on instruction, review pages and meta data, translate text, analyze structures, set elements and styles, or prepare redirects. It works directly in the project, not through detours such as copied blocks of text.
How I work with the copilot
AI doesn't replace craftsmanship. Concept, design, information architecture and quality control stay with me. The AI takes over what is repetitive and time-consuming:
- creating and filling dozens or hundreds of CMS entries cleanly,
- bringing an entire website into a second language,
- reviewing and completing meta titles, descriptions and structured data consistently,
- checking content for spelling, terminology and tone,
- tracking down issues such as missing alt text or broken links.
Every step is reviewed before it goes live. The result: the same quality in a fraction of the time. I pass this efficiency on to you in the form of lower development costs.
Migrations: switching to Webflow with AI support
The advantage is particularly clear in migrations. Anyone moving from WordPress, TYPO3, Drupal or an older system to Webflow usually has a lot of content: blog posts, case studies, pages, images, old URLs. In the past, that meant days of copying and pasting.
Today, I export the content, prepare it in a structured way and have it transferred into the Webflow CMS through the MCP server. The AI helps map the fields, clean up old HTML, carry over the meta data and set up redirects from old to new URLs. I check samples, fix special cases and review the live site at the end. That way, content and rankings are preserved, and the switch is much faster.
I describe how a switch from WordPress to Webflow works in practice, and where Webflow is not the right choice, in my post WordPress or Webflow? An honest comparison for SMEs.
How a Webflow project works with me
- Concept and structure: We clarify goals, target audiences and content, and define the page structure.
- Design: The design is based on your brand and is created directly as a design system with colors, fonts and components.
- Development: I build the website visually and with custom code, set up the CMS and add structured data.
- Content and migration: I transfer existing content with AI support, and we add new content together.
- Quality control and launch: I check rendering, load times, SEO settings and redirects before the website goes live.
- Admin training: You learn to maintain your content yourself and can reach out to me with questions at any time.
What you get out of it as an SME
Security without maintenance
Webflow delivers your website as static files through a global network. There is no server of your own, no PHP installation and no plugins you have to update. Webflow takes care of hosting, SSL, backups and patching the infrastructure. You can read why this matters so much for SMEs in my post “Who Actually Takes Care of Your Website's Security?”.
Visibility in Google and AI search
Clean code, fast load times and structured data are a good foundation for visibility. Alongside classic search engine optimization (SEO), I optimize your website for AI search: for answer engines (AEO, answer engine optimization) and generative AI search (GEO, generative engine optimization), so AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini find, cite and recommend you.
Easy content editing
In the Webflow Editor, you edit text, images and CMS content directly on the page. Structure and design stay protected. After a short admin training session, you can maintain your content on your own.
Multilingual websites
For multilingual websites, there is Webflow Localization. As an alternative, I use Weglot; KOMUNIQUE is a Weglot partner with very good terms for my clients.
When Webflow is not the best choice
An honest assessment also includes where other solutions fit better. When content is managed in very large volumes, from several sources or for many channels, I use Webstudio combined with a headless CMS such as Hygraph or Sanity, depending on the requirements. For complex online stores, Shopify is often the better foundation. You'll find an overview of the classic systems in my post Craft CMS vs. Drupal, TYPO3 and WordPress.
Conclusion
Webflow is a professional development tool. It combines visual coding for speed with classic code for flexibility, offers a structured CMS and structured data, and with the MCP server, AI works as a copilot directly in the project. For you as an SME, that means a fast, secure and well-maintained website, developed efficiently and without the maintenance burden.
